The Module Name – NeON
NeON refers to the N-type silicon wafers that it uses as the base material. Historically P-type silicon (doped with boron) has been used for the initial layer in a PV cell. However, under sunlight boron can react with oxygen and form electron traps, reducing the performance of the cell over time.
This process is known as Light Induced Degradation (LID). N-Type cells on the other hand, are doped with phosphorous so do not undergo these reactions under sunlight.
So LG NeON modules don’t suffer the same level of degradation that other modules are liable to. This provides high performance for 25 years and beyond giving LG confidence in providing their 25 year linear power warranty.
High Stability
NeON modules are incredibly stable. Not only do they not suffer from Light Induced Degradation (LID), but they are also immune to Potential Induced Degradation (PID). PID is an effect that occurs in high voltage systems under wet and humid conditions. LG won the 2012 Fraunhofer PID test, demonstrating their immunity to PID – a test which a number of high profile competitors failed.
Maximizing Light Absorption
Another feature of the N-type cells is that they are double-sided. This allows each cell to make use of direct sunlight and sunlight reflected from the silver back-sheet of the module. This is the reason there are no ‘all-black’ LG NeON modules. The double-sided coating squeezes extra output from the cells especially during the mornings and evenings when light hits the cell at a more inclined angle.
Light Absorption Design
NeoON modules also squeeze more performance out of their cells by using two anti-reflective coatings instead of the single coating used in conventional modules. Both the module itself and the cell have enhanced anti-reflective coating increasing light absorption.
NeON Key Advantages
The NeON is a standard 60-cell module, with 60 cell module voltages and a standard frame size. The module has a very high performance with 17.1-18.3% efficiencies giving power outputs ranging from 285-300W. With the 285W module, you can install a 4kW system with 14 standard sized modules instead of 16. With the 300W module, you can maximise limited roof space and squeeze every last bit of power out of it.
There are other high performance modules on the market, but a key advantage of LG NeON over its nearest competitors is that the module voltage is low, meaning that on many systems they can be installed onto a single string, rather than two strings. This low voltage also allows LG NeON to be installed with microinverters The NeON cell is a more stable cell compared to high performance back-contact cell technology significantly reducing the risk of hot spots forming.
Peace of Mind
LG offer a totally linear performance warranty. In a time of significant PV industry uncertainty it is next to worthless for some companies to talk about 10 and 25 year warranties. This year has seen one of the world’s biggest PV manufacturers go bankrupt and many other manufacturers are struggling. LG is a global company with extensive reach in many other industries beyond Solar PV. It is pretty much a foregone conclusion that LG will still be a significant global presence in the unlikely event of making a warranty claim in year 24.
LG is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of mobile phones, flat screen TVs, air conditioners, washing machines and refrigerators. As a future oriented company, LG relies on the technology of renewable energies and is expanding it. The entire range of high quality solar products are being manufactured in LG’s leading production site Korea.
LG’s high quality solar products are being manufactured in LG’s leading production facility in South Korea.
LG Solar manufacture outstanding 250 watt All Black Panels, as well as superior efficiency panels such as their 285 watt and 300 watt panels.
